IT IS NOT EASY TO SING IN THE STUDIO *Producer Engineer Jonell Polansky is currently developing her website as she does artists. *Please check back at the first of the year for more detailed information *Click below for more information and audio clips about Jonell and her vocal development skills. Multi-faceted, multi-talented, adventurous, fearless, intelligent and creative are just a few adjectives used to describe producer/engineer/songwriter Jonell Polansky. But perhaps the most useful characteristic that Jonell possesses is the one that sets her apart in her craft. It is the fact that she is a great listener. Listening takes time. Listening takes patience. In her opinion, listening is the key to artist development and it is an area at which Jonell excels. “I think recording vocals is a lost art. You must listen to an artist. Realize that despite their talent, they are not perfect and never will be. It is my job to be patient and teach them to give their best performance...in the studio.” There is pretty much nothing that Jonell has not done, or attempted. She has climbed mountains in Sierra Nevada, Yosemite. The Himalayas and everywhere in between. She even scaled the famous El Capitan. Those are just a few of her “outdoors adventures.” She has been an engineer for IBM and TRW as well as an entrepreneur for her own Silicon Valley start-ups. Throughout her life her love for music continued to manifest itself in many ways. In college at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA she really began to nurture that quest. She was there to study technical theater with an emphasis on stage lighting design but she began seriously studying classical guitar. Learning music helped her in her first career after college as a professional stage lighting designer. “I actually got jobs because I could read music and write lighting cues on the music score.” With an intellect as intense and versatile as Jonell Polansky’s it is impossible to keep it down. She went back to school, this time at CalTech and got a Masters Degree in ….. which allowed her flourishing career as a computer programmer, engineer, and(add) to expand. But as many know, once music gets into your blood it is there forever and in Jonell’s case she saw an opportunity to marry her love of music with her extensive engineering skills. She moved to Nashville TN in 1994 believing that “Music City” USA was the perfect place for her to come and continue to make music. She had been “in front” of the console many times when recording with various bands but it is when she took the controls behind the board that she realized that it was there that she could make a true difference. “My goal now is to work with artists and producers with their artists that need someone to spend that extra time with them listening.” Says the accomplished producer/engineer that has spent the past 13 years in Nashville perfecting her craft. She points to the difference in performing on stage and in a studio as one of the hardest things a recording artist will ever master. “Everything about the two environments are different. My goal is to help artists learn and alleviate any fears that exist in that vocal booth and get the best performance.” She continues, “Like everywhere time is money. There no where that is more true than in a studio. Studio time is expensive and the accounting departments want artist to have as little time as possible.” She says that is one of the reasons she has opened DaCapo Music, a full service, state-of-the-art recording studio that she owns so she can man the clock with her clients. Polansky is hoping that record labels, both small and large, will recognize that this is an important step in any artist career and further hopes that they will allow the time and money to invest into this stage. If they do, she is there to help. |
